Breguet Goes Large

12 September 2023

After a formidable fundraising effort from members of the Company, Abraham-Louis Breguet: The English Connection is the first of a new annual programme of temporary displays, showcasing extraordinary objects from public and private horological collections. The preview event took place in the Clockmakers’ Museum at the Science Museum on the evening of the 12th of September. The display has been created to mark the 200th anniversary of Breguet’s death on the 17th of September 1823, and brings together a selection of his iconic pieces, united by their connection to England. The official launch was attended by Sir Ian Blatchford, the Director of the Science Museum and Emmanuel Breguet, the 7th generation descendant of the legendary watchmaker.

Alongside the treasures in the existing gallery, this new display gives the opportunity to show further Breguet items, many of which have rarely been seen in public before. This will not only appeal to those already familiar with the collection, but also attract collectors and horological enthusiasts from the broadest of audiences, worldwide, with interests across the most diverse elements of our subject. The preview event was extremely well attended, and there was a palpable buzz of excitement from the invited guests, led by the Master, Wardens, members of the Court and distinguished guests from Montres Breguet, British Museum, Royal Collection and collectors who have generously lent items for the display.
