Birmingham City University
Birmingham City University (BCU) offers the country’s only undergraduate honours degree course in horology, taught at its well-equipped workshops at the School of Jewellery, in the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Students learn clock and watch servicing, the making of components, the theory of horology, and technical drawing. An engineering workshop, shared with other departments at the university, offers specialist casting, electroplating, forming, CAD and rapid prototyping facilities.
The core values at BCU are employability and the student experience. The curriculum has been designed to develop the traditional skills associated with clock and watchmaking while also encouraging the use of developing technologies to meet modern requirements.
Students design and construct a final year ‘masterpiece’, a significant horological mechanism that showcases the combined workshop and employability skills of the individual. The Clockmakers’ Company awards an annual prize for excellence at BCU.
