“Harrison in the Abbey”

“Harrison in The Abbey” is a 78 page soft-covered book, edited by Sir Arnold Wolfendale FRS, and generously sponsored by the Smith of Derby Group, clockmakers. The booklet begins with a foreword by H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh. This is followed by an introduction by Sir Arnold and a poem, “Jet Lag”: by Anne Stevenson.

Subsequent chapters are entitled “Westminster Abbey and its memorials”, by Sir Arnold Wolfendale, “John Harrison’s early wooden clocks”, by Dr. John C. Taylor, “Harrison the man” by Dava Sobel, “Harrison’s contributions in perspective” by Will Andrewes, “The Worshipful Company of Clockmakers” by Diana Uff, “John Harrison, the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and the Clockmakers’ Museum” by Sir George White Bt., “Beyond the bench—a glimpse into the essence of genius” by Andrew King, “A fitting memorial” by Jonathan Betts, together with notes on the Harrison Memorial Fund by Joe Buxton. The booklet contains some 40 colour illustrations, including Harrison’s first, second, third, fourth and fifth timekeepers, together with a number of his wooden clock movements.

Copies are sold in aid of the Harrison Memorial Fund, which exists to support the Museum of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and to provide “Harrison Bursaries” to assist trainee clock and watchmakers.

Payment is made to The Clockmakers’ Charity.

Livery Company Profile Survey

Did you know? A recent survey shows that the 108 City of London Livery Companies, comprising 26,250 Liverymen, have affiliations to 153 schools and colleges, 65 churches, 216 regular and reserve units of the Armed Forces, and 101 cadet units. In 2010 they gave £41.85 million to charitable causes. The Mercers’ Company recently researched and compiled The 2011 Livery Profile Survey – click to see the full report (two pages).

Dr George Daniels CBE FBHI

HMS Protector

HMS Protector - with whom WCC is affiliated - sailed from Portsmouth on 28th November 2011 and is now on her way to Antarctica. Past Master Cdr Peter Linstead-Smith OBE RN and the Deputy Master, Howard Newman FBHI, visited HMS Protector on the 21st November to wish the Captain and the crew well and presented a bulkhead clock, to keep time in the Wardroom, as a gesture of goodwill from WCC. more » Ross Watton & Naval Broadsides)
