The Clockmakers’ Museum is delighted to be able to display work by two notable contemporary artist-craftsmen British watchmakers: Dr George Daniels and Roger Smith. Dr. Daniels is represented by an example of his “Millennium” wristwatch (regulated by his co-axial escapement) and by an ultra-thin Patek-Phillipe wristwatch movement, again fitted with his patent coaxial escapement. Roger Smith is represented by a rectangular gold wristwatch (figs 1 & 2 above.
Generously loaned by the manufacturers, are a selection of gold, silver and platinum wristwatches and a pocket watch, assembled in England by “ J & T Windmills” (fig 3). J & T Windmills is a recently founded brand, launched in October 2006. It is named after the famous Joseph and Thomas Windmills, who both served as Masters of the Clockmakers’ Company in the early 18th century.
Clockmaking is represented by a very fine table regulator by David Poole incorporating a fusee movement with a jewelled “beam” remontoir, activated every six beats of the pendulum (figs. 4 & 5). David Poole served as Master of the Clockmakers’ Company in 2007.
The Museum is also very fortunate to be able to display a fine bronze medal, related to Time, entitled “Of Moments and Memories”, loaned by the celebrated medallist and sculptor, Jane McAdam Freud (Fig 6).
It is hoped that the inclusion of modern British work in the Museum will both stimulate commissions for today’s finest makers, and encourage young craftsmen and women to enter the trade.
Enquiries about commissions or horological education should be made to keeper@clockmakers.org.
