The 108 Livery Companies generate numerous activities for the benefit of their Livery, and often invite other Livery Companies to join in with a Joint or Inter Livery event. Also within The City we often receive information on lectures, concerts, recitals etc from Schools, Universities, churches and other City organisations. Below are a few examples. Art
The Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers and the Lynn Foundation co-sponsor the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize championing the fine art of representational painting. This has made an impressive impact on the art world, attracting renowned artists to submit for scrutiny by an esteemed panel of judges. More information at www.painter-stainers.org.

Beer
Surprise surprise! The Worshipful Company of Brewers do things with beer. Beer enthusiasts might like to know about the Beer Academy and take advantage of the many opportunities to take part in their events. Take a look at their website. The Brewers Company hold Beer and Cheese Festivals from time to time in the Brewers’ Hall.
Bridge
The Inter Livery Bridge Competition usually takes place in March. The Worshipful Company of Playing Cards invite you to take part.
Embroidery
The Worshipful Company of Broderers’ Percy Levy Embroidery Competition takes place every year. Deadline for receipt of entries is usually 1st December. Contact the Clerk to the Broderers’ Company at clerk@broderers.co.uk for further information.
Carriage Driving
The Worshipful Company of Saddlers plan to invite fellow Livery Companies to join them by entering teams of up to 4 people in an Inter Livery Carriage Driving Event at some time in the future. The day would include Training, Carriage Driving Skills Competition, Harnessing up tuition and competition, and during the evening meal, a horn blowing competition for the Tootling Trophy! Tell them if you are interested.
Clay Shooting
The Butchers’ Company usually hold a charity shoot around July in the grounds of Knebworth House, located just off Junction 7 of the A1M. The Environmental Cleaners’ Company hold their Inter Livery Clay Pigeon Shoot in May at Holland & Holland shooting grounds. You will find all details about this on their web-site.
Golf
Any member of the Company interested in golf, please get in touch with Mark Elliott. The prestigeous Prince Arthur Cup Golf meeting is usually at Walton Heath in May, and we have fielded a team in recent years. The Worshipful Company of Marketors have in the past arranged their Marketors’ Golf Day in the Spring at Verulam Golf Club, St Albans AL1 1JG. The Open Golf meeting is usually in July. The Lightmongers’ Company have in the past arranged a Charity Golf match in the Spring at the RAC, Woodcote Park, Epsom, Surrey, and the Insurers’ Company have arranged a Charity Golf day in the Spring at Wildernesse Golf Club, Sevenoaks, Kent. In celebration of their 750th anniversary, the Loriners Company invite you to participate in their Golf Day on 2nd September 2011 at Sundridge Park Golf Club in Bromley – contact horder455@yahoo.co.uk.
Pewterers’ Younger Inter-Livery Events
The Pewterers’ Company invite younger members of the Livery to their Inter-Livery Quizz Night in the Spring of each year. Last year’s event was an enormous success and a splendid gathering of younger members of the Livery from many different companies. Their main ‘Young’ social event of the year is their ‘Younger Inter-Livery Dinner & Dance’ uusually in May. All enquiries to Eleanor Mason Brown.
Sailing – Rutland Water Weekend
The Framework Knitters’ Company invite Liverymen, their families and friends to join them in July for a sociable day’s sailing – or spectating – in Laser dinghies provided by the Rutland Sailing School. Shrove Tuesday Pancake Races
The Inter-Livery Shrove Tuesday Pancake Race takes place every year on Shrove Tuesday, organised by The Poulters’ Company in Guildhall Yard in aid of charity. Ski Championships
The Ironmongers’ Company organise the Inter Livery Ski Championships in January each year at Morzine in France to which Livery Companies send teams or individual racers – see the liveryskiing.com website. All livery companies are invited to send a team of 3 or 4 or individual members who may be liverymen/women, freemen/women, apprentices, journeymen/women etc to race in slalom, giant slalom, ski-cross and border-cross events to be held over two days. Other entertainments are also included in the event. Skiers, whatever their ability and age, are urged to compete and the courses will be set accordingly. This is an opportunity for those liverymen and women who are not always able to be involved in their Company’s affairs to represent their own Company and meet other livery companies. Everything possible is done to keep the costs low in order to encourage younger freemen and women to attend. Please visit the www.liveryskiing.com website for more information and the entry forms.
Swimming
The Inter-Livery Swimathon is usually in March or April. It is organised by the Chartered Surveyors’ Company – at the Royal Automobile Club, Woodcote Park, Epsom, Surrey. Information from wccsurveyors@btinternet.com.
10 Pin Bowling Competition
The Worshipful Company of Basketmakers staged their first Inter-Livery 10 Pin Bowling Competition in July 2010 at the Kingpin Suite, Tavistock Hotel, Bedford Way, London WC1H 9EU, so watch this space for 2011.
Musicians Benevolent Fund
The Musicians Benevolent Fund celebrated its 90th year in February 2011 with a unique evening of music and song, and do something similar every year. On a frosty February night in 1921 eight people met to set up a fund in memory of tenor Gervase Elwes, who died in a railway accident. These unique evenings of music and song feature some of today’s finest artists and celebrate Elwes’ talent and generosity to musicians, remembering how it all began. Music Recitals
Musical enthusiasts based in London may like to know about the programme of lunchtime recitals at The Guild Church of St Dunstan-in-the-West in Fleet Street EC4A 2HD with whom we have a close relationship. They are every Wednesday at lunchtime. The programme features highly talented music students, with varied repertoires. Entry is free. Musicians’ Evensong – St Cecilia
Liverymen are welcome to apply for tickets to attend the Musicians’ Company Annual Evensong Service in memory of St Cecilia, the Patron Saint of Music, at St Paul’s Cathedral, usually in October. Our Master and Clerk process at this. Apply to the Clerk for further information.
Carvery Luncheon at Butchers’ Hall
Every Wednesday (excluding the month of August and the Christmas Break) The Worshipful Company of Butchers opens its doors to Liverymen, Guild Members and Freeman of the City of London; and invites them to reserve a place at their Carvery luncheon. Diners are offered the opportunity to see inside the Hall, meet The Master and enjoy one of the best three course luncheons served in the City of London, which includes a hearty main course of Roast Beef. At the last update the price was around £25 per person. Drinks are charged separately. In order to make a reservation to attend this popular weekly event, please call 020 7600 4106, ext 2. Timing 12.30 for 1pm. Dress code: Dark Lounge Suit.
Lunch at Ironmongers’ Hall on Mondays
Every Monday at Ironmongers’ Hall lunch is available to members of all Livery Companies and their guests. You can enjoy pre-lunch drinks in the drawing room before making your way to your table. Lunch will be served between 12.00 midday and 2.00 pm, however please make a reservation beforehand. To reserve your table simply ring Cristina Fantechi or Ed Bolling on 0207 776 2300. You will shortly also be able to make your reservation on line. All food at Ironmongers’ Hall is British and much of it sourced locally from the Nevill Estate in Surrey. A two-course lunch is (2010 price) £24.50 and a three-course lunch £28.50. Modestly priced wines, beer and soft drinks are also available. Monday lunches will not be served on Bank holidays or during August.
The Light Cavalry of The Honourable Artillery Company
Freemen and Liverymen of the Clockmakers’ Company who enjoy riding, or who would like to learn how to ride, might like to know about The Light Cavalry of the Honourable Artillery Company who are fortunate to have riding stables and indoor schooling facilities within the grounds of Windsor Great Park. The stables are run by a professional yard manager, Ms Caroline Quested, and its management follows the style of a military saddle club. All serving or ex-military personnel can use the stables and others may do so if they join the Light Cavalry Supporting Riders association. If these criteria are met then they can offer a range of services including civilian and military riding courses, side saddle and mounted skill at arms training. Hacking in Windsor Great Park can also be arranged after a certain level of competence has been demonstrated. The United Guilds Service
Every year since 1943 in March at St Paul’s Cathedral. Probably the most impressive inter livery occasion of the whole year. It is one of the grandest occasions in the City. All the Livery Companies and Guilds attend with their Prime Wardens, Upper Bailiffs, Masters and Wardens gowned and badged, as does the Lord Mayor and the Sheriffs. Only Liverymen may attend – we have a limited ticket allocation – contact the Clerk for further information and to book in for lunch at a Livery hall afterwards if you wish.
